This class is part one of a two part series titled Nourish Your Nervous System.

General Overview

With the quickening pace of technology, travel  and the overall busy-ness of our modern day lives it is easy to let self care slide.  Anxiety, insomnia, ungroundedness, exhaustion and fatigue can all be symptoms that we are not properly nourishing our nervous systems.  In Ayurveda the nervous system is related to the Vata Dosha: the air and space elements.  The more we understand the qualities of this dosha and the ways it manifests in the modern world, the easier we can find simple solutions to maintain the health of this delicate system.  In this two part series we will use the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda to learn practical self care tools to take care of our nervous systems in our modern lives.  The hope is that participants will leave the classes  feeling relaxed and nourished and with some simple tools to use at home.

Class 1 – Ayurveda as a Lens and the Magic of Oil

In this first class we will unpack some of the basic concepts of Ayurveda so that we have a common understanding and language to look at the Vata Dosha and how it relates to the nervous system.  No matter what your primary Dosha, everyone in the modern world is affected by Vata imbalances at some point. In this class we will use the lens of Ayurveda to understand why.  Some of the concepts covered in this class are the dosha system, ojas – what it is and why it is so important, why the vata dosha goes out of balance so easily in our modern world,  and ways to stay in balance.  The system of Ayurveda is more than a set of rules to follow... it can seem very complex but with the knowledge of a few basic concepts it can give you a lens to look at life and stay in balance.  We will end the class by learning some of the healing benefits of using oil externally and learning an experiential self abhyangha (oil massage) flow.   For this class please wear loose fitting clothing that you don't mind getting oily and bring an old towel to sit on.  We will be doing the Abhyangha on ourselves in class, so prepare to get a bit oily!
